Tariffs Version 310 - 3rd April 2024
Not for commercial publication or use.

Note: all business prices in the notes are exclusive of VAT, residential prices are generally inclusive of VAT at 20%, unless otherwise specified.

Service Type: Indirect   Indirect connection is where you pay for service to an operator other than the one that provides the cabled connection.  BT offers it's lines wholesale to other providers, who will charge line rental instead of BT.  Calls may be made indirectly via other operators in four ways: by dialling an access number (usually an 0800 number, sometimes 020), by dialling a short indirect access code (such as 1234), using a dialler box that dials the access number or code automatically, or using CPS (carrier pre selection) where all calls are routed automatically to another operator. When wholesale line rental and CPS are combined, there is only a single bill from the new operator. Note that some calls (premium in particular) may be cheaper via BT so dial the BT indirect code 1280 first (if you still get a BT bill).
Service Type: Callthrough   Callthrough, dial through or two stage dialling is where calls are charged by your existing operator using revenue share non-geographic and premium numbers. These were removed from the comparison in May 2019 due to ever increasing 08 and 09 access charges making them mostly uneconomic, and the difficulty of comparing prices when access charges vary so much.
Service Type: VoIP   VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls require a broadband internet connection, either ADSL over a telephone line or a cable modem.   Most VoIP services provide a telephone adaptor or it might be built into an ADSL or cable modem already, allowing a normal telephone to be used for calls.  Or you can buy VoIP telephones, which are widely used by businesses for cabling simplicity. PC only services use PC software, a sound card and PC headset to make telephone calls, the PC must remain powered on to receive calls. The performance of VoIP calls varies greatly depending on available internet bandwidth.
Service Type: Web Page   Web page calls use a web browser to set-up a call between two telephones (landline or mobile), causing both telephones to ring and be connected.  Note calls are not made using the PC, but with normal telephones.
Billing: Account   Account billing means calls are charged in arrears with a monthly or quarterly account, typically paid automatically by direct debit or credit card.  Operators that allow payment by cash or cheque usually charge an extra monthly fee.  Some operators include a free paper bill posted monthly or quarterly, more are now charging extra it, some only provide online billing via email or a web page.
Billing: Prepay   Prepay billing means that calls must be prepaid by depositing money in an account from which the cost of calls is automatically deducted.  Prepay may be done by buying a phonecard, topping up the account from a credit card or calling a fixed price premium telephone number.  The account may be set to automatically top-up from a credit card when it's nearly empty.
Billing: Premium   Premium billing is for Callthrough services where 08 or 09 numbers are dialled first, see above, so the call charge appears on your normal monthly or quarterly account.
International Calls   Different operators may place certain countries in different bands to those used by BT.  The international prices should therefore be treated as approximate in such cases. These tables usually show the tariff for the first named country.
Call Set-up and Minimum Charges

Telephone calls may be charged in many different ways.  Historically, BT charged calls in meter units with varying call duration for each fixed priced unit. In the 1970s BT changed to per second billing, with each call having a minimum charge.  Recent years has seen calls charged both by length and with a call set-up or connection charge, to which BT changed in 2006, but from late 2019 BT added new PAYG packages without call set-up but higher price per minute.  To simplify charging, many operators round the call length, typically up to the nearest minute, sometimes 6, 10 or 30 seconds.  Business tariffs  are more likely to charge calls by the second.
These tariffs tables show call set-up charges and minimum call costs separately for inland (01/02/03), mobile (075/077/078/079), international (00) and other (070/076/08/09) calls. Usually there is either a set-up charge or a minimum charge. The minimum call seconds is also shown, which is usually the duration rounding interval, so calls are rounded up to this period for charging.
Access Charge for Services calls   Charging for most non-geographic calls changed from 1st July 2015, so that 08/09/118 numbers will be advertised with a consistent Service Charge (ie £1/min), to which each operator will add their own consistent Access Charge (10p to 20p/min, higher for calls from mobiles). The Access Charge is usually charged rounded up to the next minute no call set-up, (sometimes per second), the Service Charge is always per second with no minimum.  For residential customers, the Access Charge is fixed 24/7 for all call types, but Ofcom does not regulate call costs for business customers so operators may charge varying costs, add call set-up or charge different Service Charges. In the Business table, an access charge of NAT means it's equal to a national call including any set-up charge, a percentage means that value is added to the Service Charge.
Call Periods - BT residential   Daytime (peak) period is 7am to 7pm.  Evening (off-peak, night) period is 7pm to 7am.  Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.  If no price is shown for weekends, the Daytime and Evening prices apply seven days a week. Off-Peak period is Evenings and Weekends. Prior to 1st April 2010, daytime was 6am to 6pm, and prior to 16th February 2005 it was 8am to 6pm.
Call Periods - BT business   Daytime (peak) period is 7am to 7pm.  Evening (off-peak, night) period is 7pm to 7am.  Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.   If no price is shown for weekends, the Daytime and Evening prices apply seven days a week. Off-Peak period is Evenings and Weekends. Prior to 1st April 2008, daytime was 8am to 6pm.
Call Periods - other operators, unless stated   Daytime (peak) period is 8am to 6pm.   Evening (off-peak, night) period is 6pm to 8am.  Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.   If no price is shown for weekends, the Daytime and Evening prices apply seven days a week. Off-Peak period is Evenings and Weekends.
Broadband Traffic Figures   For most broadband services, two figures are quoted: download speed and monthly bandwidth limit.  Download speed is megabits per second, ie 14Mb, and is the estimated best speed on a short good quality line, the speed may often be slower.  Typically, divide by 10 to get the megaytes per second to represent file sizes, so a 14 MByte file would take 10 seconds to download at 14Mb. Upload speeds are not often quoted, but are always much slower.  Monthly bandwidth is measured in gigabytes, so 20GB is 20 GBytes, or 20,000 MBytes.  Where unlimited bandwidth is offered, there may still be hourly or daily limits, or a fair usage policy with a limit.  Sometimes speed is reduced temporarily when bandwidth limits are reached, more often you get an excessive usage bill.
Broadband Pricing   Broadband pricing usually has a fixed length contact, 12, 18 or 24 months, with a fixed price for that period, increasing to a higher price beyond the minimum period.  There is usually an upfront fee to cover hardware, delivery and activation. Note this fee excludes cost of a telephone line. The minimum period price often fluctuates monthly as special offers are made to entice customers to change suppliers, but the upfront fee will then be payable again and is sometimes quite high, there may be a separate fee to change landline supplier.  This comparison shows the package fee for the first 12 or 18 months, then the long term package fee and the upfront cost as separate columns in the Tariffs table.  The Compare Broadband Package Costs web pages show the total cost for the first year.
Fibre broadband and VoIP   BT OpenReach is closing down the PSTN/ISDN telephone network slowly over the next five year, totally by December 2025. In practice, PSTN is already ceasing from some properties in which FTTP (full fibre) is installed, by removal of the copper telephone cable at the same time as a fibre cable is installed. From 2020, some broadband suppliers like Sky have no longer provide PSTN with new contracts but VoIP only.  Some suppliers will provide FTTP broadband alone without any VoIP, but many such as BT automatically migrate your PSTN number to VoIP, even if you already have an alternate VoIP service. If you are switching broadband contracts and don't want interruption of your existing PSTN service, check with the new provider that it will not be replaced by VoIP.  WBC SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) is the wholesale name for FTTC/VDSL without a phone line for speeds up to 80MB, then SOG.Fast for 160 and 330Mb speeds.  If a supplier offers WBC SOGEA, it means no landline, only VoIP.
Tariff Dates   Dates in this table show when tariffs were last checked if the tariffs are older than three months, in addition to when the tariffs became effective. This typically means the operator has emailed stating there are no changes this month, or the web page is unchanged.  Note that some operators may not keep their web site up to date, and worse, don't date their tariffs either.
Operator Assistance Calls   Calls made via the BT operator are charged at £1.32/min for inland, mobile and 08 calls, with a £3.98 call connection charge. International calls are £1.32, £1.99. £2.65,  £3.98 or £5.31/min depending on country with a £7.25 international call connection charge.
Payment by Direct Debit   Most telephone packages are paid in arrears, quarterly for BT and monthly for most other operators.  Payment is usually by direct debit, with payment by other means attracting an additional cost of £3.06 per month for BT business (no VAT chargeable), up to £4.09 for some other operators. From 1st December 2014, BT no longer charges residential customers extra for non-automated debit payments.
NTS - Number Translation Service   Number Translation Service refers to calls to non-geographic numbers (starting with 07, 08, 09, such as 07000, 0845, 0870, etc).  Calls to such numbers are effectively translated for delivery to 'hidden' geographic numbers. Most operators have differing prices for geographic and NTS calls, the latter often being more expensive due to payments being made to the NTS operator (which may kick back money to the whoever rents the number.  From 1st August 2009, revenue sharing ceased for 0870 calls, which should now be charged the same as 01/02 calls.
Timeline (speaking clock)   Calls to Timeline 123 are charged by BT at 36.5p per call residential, and 53p (ex VAT) business.
Calling and Network Features   Telephone lines always offer various calling and network features, some free, some charged per call, some requiring monthly payment, usually controlled using four digit codes.  The features available on any line will depend on the exchange capability, and sometimes whether a wholesale operator decides to resell a BT feature.  The common features are listed below, with some of the different names under which they are known. Prices shown are BT residential including VAT, business sometimes costs more, full prices are in the Line Rentals table.
